Wintershall in the United Arab Emirates

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) the United Arab Emirates (UAE) sit on top of the seventh-largest proven crude oil reserves in the world.

As national oil company the “Abu Dhabi National Oil Company” (ADNOC) is responsible for the reserves. With a production volume of more than 2.7 million barrels per day, it ranks among the major producers worldwide.
Nevertheless, the challenges of bringing oil and gas to the surface are increasing in the Gulf region, too. For example, the high level of hydrogen sulfide in the natural gas prevented production in some fields. To keep production stable over the long term, however, even these technically complex reservoirs must be exploited.

One example is the Shuwaihat field, where we are conducting the technical appraisal as the field's operator.

Shuwaihat sour gas & condensate field

In 2012 we took over the technical appraisal of the Shuwaihat sour gas and condensate field together with ADNOC and Austrian company OMV. The reservoir contains more than 20 percent hydrogen sulfide, which places great demands on the exploration and production activities.

As a technology-driven E&P specialist, we benefit greatly from the experience we have collected during more than 40 years of sour gas production in Germany, where we developed 16 fields and produced roughly 30 billion cubic meters of sour gas. Because of the complex geological and environmental conditions in Germany and Europe, Wintershall has always focused on technological competency.

For instance, together with BASF we recently developed a new gas-cleaning technology that provides us with an efficient way of removing the hydrogen sulfide from the gas.
