Wintershall 4.0 Digitalization at a glance

Among other things, Wintershall is testing the possibilities of digital transformation in three lighthouse projects. The focus here is on big data, online platforms and artificial intelligence. These new technologies can change the entire value-creation process from exploration to production. Artificial intelligence can work out the design of boreholes, 3-D printers can produce spare parts, and algorithms can analyze data at lightning speed.
In 2018, Wintershall used the BASF high-performance supercomputer Quriosity for the first time in the analysis of cores. With its 1.75-petaflop performance, the computer took over work that would otherwise be carried out physically in laboratories. Instead of a year, Quriosity took just a few days. The tests were completed successfully and the results are now being used in ongoing projects.
