Mario Mehren CEO

Mario Mehren was appointed Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Wintershall in June 2015 and has been a member of the Board of Executive Directors since October 2011. In the board the business graduate was responsible for the activities in Exploration & Production in Russia, North Africa & South America. 

After completing a course in business administration at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, he began his professional career in 1998 as specialist adviser in BASF's Group Accounting section in the Corporate Finance Department. In 2001, Mehren became Head of Finance and Accounting at BASF Schwarzheide, and in 2003 he moved to BASF in Chile to become Managing Director of Finance and Administration.

The Koblenz-born Mehren joined Wintershall in 2006 as Vice President Finance & Information Management.

Martin Bachmann Exploration & Production for Europe & Middle East

A trained geophysicist, Martin Bachmann has been a member of Wintershall’s Board of Executive Directors since 2009. He is in charge of Exploration & Production Europe & Middle East.

Having a leading edge in technology is crucial in the oil and gas industry. For Wintershall, investments in innovative know-how are a way of securing the future.

Beside German and English, he also speaks Dutch, French, and Spanish. Born in Switzerland, he studied geophysics at ETH technical university in Zürich. He left the country in 1983 to take up a management position with Shell. Over the next 17 years, his career took him to Spain, Turkey, the Netherlands, and Syria, before he moved to Great Britain to become General Manager of Shell UK Ltd. in 2000.

In 2003, he transferred to The Hague, where he was appointed Vice President Russia, Caspian, and SE Europe. Bachmann joined Wintershall in 2009 as Head of Exploration and Production Europe and Middle East.

Ressort 2: Exploration & Production Europe / Middle East

The ressort "E&P Europe / Middle East" creates added value through the exploration, development and production of oil and gas in its core and development regions. Its business activities are conducted under global functions (such as Global Development or Global Exploration & New Ventures) and operational units (OPCOs) in the countries.

The OPCOs own the concessions and facilities and operate within their area of responsibility (currently in Germany, Norway, the Netherlands and the Middle East region). The ressort also includes the research division.

Thilo Wieland Exploration & Production in Russia, North Africa & South America

Thilo Wieland, an industrial engineering and business management graduate, has been a member of the Wintershall Board of Executive Directors since December 2015 and is responsible for Exploration & Production in Russia, North Africa & South America. After studying industrial engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, he began his career in 1999 at Wintershall Erdgas Handelshaus in Berlin. 

Since then he has held various positions within the Wintershall Group, among others as Head of Department Natural Gas Supply West at WINGAS.

Until 2013, he represented Wintershall's shareholder interests in the Nord Stream and South Stream projects before becoming Vice President, Strategy and Portfolio Management, within the Wintershall Group.

As General Manager of Wintershall Libya, Wieland has been responsible for the activities of Germany’s largest internationally active oil and gas producer in the North African country since 2014.

Ressort 3: Exploration & Production Russia / North Africa / South America

The Exploration & Production Russia / North Africa / South America ressort under the leadership of Board member Thilo Wieland brings together all Wintershall's activities in Russia, North Africa and South America.

In addition to the existing Wintershall shareholdings – Juzhno Russkoye, Achimgaz and Volgodeminoil – in Russia, other major E&P projects are currently being initiated with Gazprom. Ressort 3 is also home to global functions such as Global Facility Engineering and the operating units Argentina and Libya with their concessions and facilities.

Dr. Ties Tiessen Finances, Sales & Commercial

A lawyer by profession, Dr. Ties Tiessen has been a member of the Board since 2005. He is responsible for Finances, Sales & Commercial. After studying law and political science at Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, from which he graduated with a doctorate, he started his professional career as a lawyer in an international law company in Cologne in 1987. In 1989, he joined BASF’s corporate legal department in Ludwigshafen as a legal adviser.

We have mapped the path to further growth via new projects for example in Norway and Russia. That requires billion-dollar investments but generates a sustainable income.

Dr. Ties Tiessen
Finance, Sales & Commercial

After five years, Tiessen was promoted to head of Legal, Tax, Insurance, and Banking at BASF subsidiary Rheinische Olefinwerke GmbH in Wesseling, before transferring to Kassel in 1996 to become head of Legal, Tax, and Insurance at Wintershall.

From 2001 onward, Tiessen worked as General Manager of Wintershall Libya in Tripoli, before being appointed as a member of the Board of Executive Directors of Wintershall in February 2005.
