South Stream - Secure Energy for Europe

The 940 kilometer pipelines will connect the EU member states in Southeastern Europe directly with Russia. And secure energy for Europe.

Strategy at WintershallTechnology, research and partnership provide resource security

Our technical expertise in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons and our ability to discover new oil fields through innovative techniques will guarantee our future business success. With the right technology and logistics our dedicated employees will e meet all the challenges we encounter, such as extreme heat in the desert, high waves in the North Sea, or permafrost in Siberia... Wintershall’s experience in working on four continents with widely different climatic and geological conditions has made us a sought-after and recognized partner around the world

It is no doubt that natural gas and crude oil will remain important sources of energy in the future. For this reason, Wintershall is constantly seeking new deposits and innovative processes that will help to enable us to improve the yield of existing deposits. The technology we use is our capital in the international oil and gas business. Our technological expertise proves us a competitive advantage that gives our company access to highly attractive deposits. Our teams of experts adapt to the technological developments of the constantly changing challenges we face and are among the best in the industry for innovation, efficiency and reliability. One proven example of the impressive work of our experts is with the use of biopolymer schizophyllan for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Another example of our technological proficiency is in the area of horizontal drilling which we use when trying to access difficult tight gas and gas condensate deposits.
Wintershall believes in promoting forward-looking technology, for example in the Netherlands, where we use one of the world’s most advanced remote control systems to operate a major portion of our North Sea platforms from the mainland. Our strategy for the future is to remain a technological pioneer. Through our young talent program SPEAD, we systematically pass on our “know-how” to our next generation of engineers and scientists. At Wintershall,  we attach great importance on using the best methods to use our resources as efficiently as possible as well as in an environment-friendly manner.

Sustainable strength: Wintershall

What is the right source of energy for the future? In addition to the increased use of sun, wind, and water (which are energy sources subject to natural fluctuations), oil and gas will remain important components of the global energy mix for decades to come. Natural gas is an ideal renewable source of energy because it is safe, clean, and affordable. Furthermore, there are sufficient quantities of natural gas to last for decades, and the pipeline is virtually on our doorstep. Demand for natural gas will certainly rise significantly. At Wintershall, we are prepared by being directly linked to Russia's gas reservoirs through the Nord Stream and, in future, by linking to the South Stream pipelines, we can play a significant role in shaping Europe's supply. In the future, when once both parallel sections have come on stream, the Nord Stream alone will supply 55 billion cubic meters of gas every year. This is equivalent to the generating capacity of 40 nuclear or 55 coal-fired power stations. The volumes of natural gas we will jointly produce with Gazprom in Western Siberia will also contribute to Europe's supply security. Additionally, we still have capacity for more and in short, will continue to grow.

From local to international

Wintershall is a global company with local roots. Based in Kassel, we are not only located in the heart of Germany, but also in central Europe.  With ourworkforce of over 2,000 employees from more than 35 nations, we have been exploring for and producing oil and gas for more than 80 years. Two countries in particular, Norway and Russia, will play a pivotal role for the future energy supplies to Europe because of their large oil and gas reserves and the existing links to the markets of Western Europe. Wintershall is involved in six of the twelve biggest oil discoveries made in Norway in the past five years and our task over the next few years will be to drive the development of these deposits.  Wintershall also has activities in the Dutch, Danish, and British sectors of the North Sea, where we have made new oil and gas discoveries. We also want to grow in our core region Russia. Our successful gas production ventures with OAO Gazprom in the Achimgaz and Yuzhno Russkoye projects in Siberia are excellent springboards for engaging in further activities in Russia. We are currently planning to extend field development in the Achimgaz reservoirs. In addition, Wintershall continues to invest in domestic production. We are strengthening our involvement in South America and North Africa by engaging in new exploration activities and expanding existing oil fields. Wintershall will also continue to expand its activities in Qatar and Abu Dhabi in the Arabian Peninsula.

Win-win partnership

In addition to technological expertise and efficient project management, our successful partnership with Gazprom will continue to play an important role in the future. The way we focus on the security of our supply routes, from the wells in Siberia, through to the transport infrastructure to the customers in European markets, is highly recognized in our industry.
Our joint ventures with WINGAS, WIEH, and WIEE for trading natural gas in Europe are set to expand our strong position even further, as natural gas is increasingly used as a renewable source of energy. Wintershall’s involvement in the construction of the new Nord Stream and South Stream gas pipelines is an example of the company’s integration into international networks that will secure direct and fast links to the important sources of energy. Moreover, with our Russian partner OAO Gazprom, we will have direct access to the sources in Siberia.
