Exploration and ProductionReliable energy guaranteed
It is hard to imagine industrial operations or even private activities without oil and gas – anywhere in the world. Not only do they supply energy for heat and power, they are also found in everyday items, such as medicines, plastics, and clothing. With an annual production of around 130 million barrels oil equivalent, Wintershall is Germany’s largest crude oil and natural gas producer. Our success is driven by two core competencies: exploring for and producing crude oil and natural gas as well as trading, transporting, and storing natural gas. Natural gas is a future-oriented resource in global energy supplies. There are sufficient supplies of this climate-friendly, cost-effective, and safe fuel.
In pursuit of energy
No energy without resources. This is why, for more than 80 years, we have continuously been seeking to develop new production sites and deposits around the world. This has helped us build a high level of technical expertise, so that even difficult geological or climatic conditions do not put us off looking for these resources. Whether in temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius in the desert, in 50 degrees below freezing in the Siberia Tundra, or in high waves and strong winds on the open sea, technical know-how and the will to succeed lead us time and again to discovering new deposits of raw materials. Our reserve life is currently around 10 years. And there are other promising resources ahead – a solid basis for the future.
Success mastered with energy
Wintershall is Germany’s number one exploration and production company; it is number eleven in Europe, and number 59 globally. Between 2000 and 2009, we increased oil production by around 70 percent, to 136 million barrels oil equivalent. Even in the crisis-hit year of 2010, we produced 133 million barrels oil equivalent, thus maintaining production at this high level. All of this is the result of consistent investments in innovative technology and strategic partnerships. An investment in the future.
In Germany, Wintershall has grown into the country’s largest oil producer. To ensure that energy supplies continue to run smoothly, we opt to work with strong partners and expand our activities. The German-Russian Achimgaz and Yuzhno Russkoye joint ventures have reserves of up to 800 billion cubic meters of natural gas. In Europe, our strategy is to expand in particular oil deposits in Norway and in the North Sea. Wintershall has around 40 licenses in Norway, half of them as operator. In Argentina, Wintershall is likewise an established gas producer. Central Argentina and the area off the coast of Tierra del Fuego offer excellent growth prospects and new exploration areas. In addition, Wintershall wants to continue to extend its activities in the Middle East.
