Wintershall in Argentina

Argentina boasts significant gas deposits in South America. The country has proven gas reserves and expected gas resources of up to 2,000 billion cubic meters and is one of the largest producers of natural gas in Southern and Central America. Concessions in oil and gas fields in central Argentina and off the coast of Tierra del Fuego give us long-term access to the country’s most promising hydrocarbon reserves. Traditionally, these reserves have been providing a large contribution to our corporate-wide natural gas production.

Our activities in Argentina go back to 1978, particularly in natural-gas production. Wintershall Energía S.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of Wintershall in Kassel, has interests in 13 oil and gas fields, making it one of the country’s biggest natural gas producers. Today, our special focus is on exploring for new deposits, increasingly also targeting crude oil. To this end, we have significantly increased our investment in exploration in Argentina. We explore both in regions that have not yet been geologically developed, such as the Cañadón Asfalto basin, and in regions that are already producing, for example the Neuquén Basin, where we primarily explore for new resources in deeper-lying rock strata in the foothills of the Andes.

The Aguada Pichana concession is situated at the center of the Neuquén Basin. Over 170 wells, 124 of which produce gas, have been drilled in this field since it was discovered in 1972. Wintershall has an interest in this gas field in the Neuquén Basin, partnered by Total, Repsol YPF, and PAE. Currently, development is continuing on the field’s fringes in the northeast. The additional field extension undertaken in the north-west and further exploration activity in the south-west are intended to develop additional reserves to secure Argentina’s gas supplies.

The activities in the San Roque concession, also in the Neuquén Basin, are currently being expanded – including the development of the Rincon Chico field. In addition, there are further exploration projects in this region as well as in the Cañadón Asfalto Basin in Central Argentina. We are also involved in the Cruz del Sur pipeline project, which transports Argentinean gas from Buenos Aires to Montevideo in Uruguay.
