Our exploration team in South Patagonia took the initiative in the Cañadón Asfalto basin: Our people had set up camp in one of the small villages in this sparsely populated and economically deprived region. They quickly made contact, particularly with the 30 children of the small local school. more

In addition to our cultural commitment, we also focus on helping people in need. Where we have activities, we see ourselves as a neighbor who helps out when needed. Our employees have lent a helping hand in projects ranging from providing sports clothing and school uniforms for 30 learners in the Cañadón-Asfalto Basin in Southern Patagonia, organizing computers and printers for a neighboring hospital, through supporting a public kitchen run by Caritas in Tierra del Fuego together with our partner Total. We have also by now established a tradition of not giving Christmas presents to customers and business partners. Instead, we support charities and humanitarian organizations in Germany and Russia. In recent years, for example, we have given to schools, homes for children, and an SOS Children’s Village, as well as to voluntary organizations and facilities for promoting the young.
A very special project was realized in North Africa. When the mosque on the premises of Wintershall Libya became too small for the large number of local employees, we had a new, bigger mosque built in 2004. Under the supervision of a Libyan engineer, between 15 and 20 employees of a local construction company worked for five months on the new Omar Ben Al Khatab mosque. It bears the name of a wellknown religious leader, who was an important figure in the spread of Islam in the region around Jakhira. The mosque has been officially recognized and registered by the relevant authority. An imam has been appointed, who now calls the faithful to prayer every Friday.
